The International History Bee and Bowl (IHBB) are two academic quiz competitions with a history focus (the Bee is for individual students, the Bowl is for teams) that are held throughout Europe and around the world each school year. Founded in 2010, IHBB organizes events now in over 50 countries, including the annual European Championships and the biennial International History Olympiad. IHBB is administered by International Academic Competitions, an organization that oversees competitions for over 100,000 students around the world each year. IAC was founded by David Madden, a former 19-day champion on the American quiz show Jeopardy, who competed in academic quiz competitions throughout four years in high school and four years at Princeton University. David and his wife, Nolwenn (who herself competed in academic competitions during high school in France for which she won a trip to Canada), continue to oversee all aspects of IAC as co-Executive Directors.

All IHBB events featured on this website are held in English and feature comprehensive questions on all aspects of history. We pride ourselves on running competitions that are well-designed, logistically smooth, fair to all participants, and intellectually stimulating. We firmly believe that academic competitions can help students develop confidence, deepen historical understanding, and lead to friendships formed at tournaments. University admissions officers also are often keenly interested in past participation and achievements in academic competitions.
